Graduated with a first master’s degree in Archaeology Sciences, with a specialty on Pre-Hispanic Peru, at Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, I continue with a master’s degree in Archaeothanatology at Bordeaux University, this time specialized on colonial Peru. My research work focuses on changes in funeral practices.
My first Master was interested in funerary bundles surmounted by false heads (made of wood, ceramic or fabric) representing a human face that are notably found on the sites of the central Peruvian coast from the Middle Horizon (600 AD) with the development of the Wari phenomenon.
At the end of these two years of study, I had the opportunity to join the Franco-Peruvian archaeological program of Guadalupe which opened the doors to historical and colonial archaeology. In August 2025, I was able to participate in the archaeological excavations of the site of Anlape, one of the first churches built in northern Peru by the Spaniards (1561). In September 2025, I joined the Master 2 in Archaeothanatology in Bordeaux in which I will be able to conduct an anthropological study on part of the human remains at the Anlape site in order to develop an idea of the buried population.
For this cartographic project, I chose to present:
the church of Anlape (Peru, North Coast)
the Haciendas of Nasca (Peru, South Coast)
the fort San Luis del Alba de Cruces (Chile, South Coast)
the underwater site of Salmedina I (Colombia, Caribbean Sea).
For the first site, the choice was from the heart. I wanted to present Anlape because it is part of my studies. I am lucky to have gone there to excavate, to have met the team and to have exchanged with the inhabitants who come every day to see the progress of the works. I am aware that funerary archaeology raises many questions regarding ethics, especially when it comes to colonial contexts. The anthropological work is carried out with respect for the individuals buried in these places. The scientific interest here is to understand the certain relationship with the death of the buried population and their funeral strategies. It is a question of studying these funerary contexts to understand the period of "transition" between the pre-Hispanic and colonial period in northern Peru and the changes that occur there - namely the impact of Spanish colonization through evangelization, the imposition of Christian worship, on the beliefs of the native populations.
In the continuity of ideas, the Haciendas of Nasca is my second choice. This is also a site located in Peru. I wanted to highlight it because the research project would need to be better known. The works carried out are very informative on the African diaspora in Peru during the colonial period and on the role of these Afro-Andean populations in the construction of the current Peruvian society.
During my readings, I came across an article that presented the fort San Luis del Alba de Cruces in Chile and how it had been a tool for colonization of the landscape. I was particularly interested in this article which highlighted the archaeology of the landscape to point out the "indirect" deculturation here Mapuche by the construction of the colonial landscape, here mainly military.
In general, I sought in the presentation of the sites to show different disciplines in archaeology and different contexts. For Salmedina I, I wanted to highlight an underwater site. It’s not because we no longer see it, that it didn’t exist, or doesn’t exist anymore.
It is not at all an exhaustive work and there are so many sites missing to highlight and re-value the history of populations that were subjected in a different way to colonization. I hope nevertheless that the presentation of these 4 sites bearing the history of the Andean cone will have interested you and perhaps even made you want to learn more. Do not hesitate to read the works of the researchers mentioned in the bibliography, which are the main sources of these data.
